The figure is identified as Gabriel by an inscription in the base (not shown). It is one of four monumental statues of archangels flanking the east end of the nave. From early times Gabriel's attribute was a clipeus bearing a likeness or symbol of Christ. This clipeus is blank, but perhaps it was not always so.
